A doctor’s working day comprises of administration as well as seeing patients. The administration component of being a GP has increased considerably over the years and can sometimes take up to 50% of the working day. During the break in between surgeries, the doctor will read and action hospital letters, complete referrals and tasks from the surgery, answer queries, check blood tests, issue medications, conduct home visits and deal with any emergencies.

There are also regular meetings with district nurses, community matrons and social workers to discuss complex cases. In addition, the doctors and nurses have a responsibility to complete frequent audits to ensure care and quality is maintained. Furthermore, practice meetings also take place to discuss any issues or improvement projects within the practice. Educational meetings allow doctors and nurses to keep our skills and knowledge up to date. All of these tasks ensure that the practice runs as efficiently and safely as possible.
